Discover the stunning Winter Way
The Winter Way serves as the natural gateway to Galicia from the plateau, used since Roman times. This route developed as a winter alternative to avoid the steep climbs over the snowy peaks of O Cebreiro. The Roman tunnel at Montefurado stands as clear evidence of its historic importance.
Throughout history, different groups have followed this route. In the early 19th century, Napoleon’s invading troops also used this path, which eventually led to the construction in 1883 of the first railway line connecting Galicia with the rest of the Iberian Peninsula.
The Winter Way is well known for its route through Las Médulas, Valdeorras, and the Ribeira Sacra—regions renowned for their outstanding wines and breathtaking landscapes. Pilgrims can explore the heritage of Monforte de Lemos, visit the wineries and architecture of Chantada, and climb to the top of O Faro, where views stretch across all four Galician provinces.
This alternative route, with its nine stages, offers a unique and peaceful experience away from the crowds. If you’re looking for pilgrim accommodation in Ourense during your journey, A Rectoral de Seadur provides comfortable, well-located apartments—perfect for resting on this beautiful Winter Way.
